Security Tips
Load shedding and or power failures can affect your home and business security systems!
Alarms
- Always ensure that your alarm is working correctly. We had alarm technicians on standby to service your remote controls, panic devices, alarm boards, radios, batteries and sensors. Give us a call to book a service!
- With prolonged power failures or load shedding in your neighborhood, alarm batteries will start to fail rendering your alarm unserviceable and leave you exposed to risk of break-ins and security issues.
- Due to power outages we experience extremely high call volumes due to alarm activations and we have to allocate resources to investigate. Please call the Control Center and report accidental activations so we know where to concentrate our efforts. Power failures result in many false alarm activations that render our service ineffective. Test your alarm regularly.
- If your alarm battery has been in use for more than 6 months we strongly recommend that you replace it, especially if you are going away.
- If you are going away, ask a trusted person to regularly check that your alarm is functioning correctly.
Generators
- Generator theft will increase as their re-sale value increases due to load shedding.
- Make sure you use your generator runs in a well ventilated area as exhaust fumes are toxic.
- Remember to lock it up after use to avoid theft. Never leave it running unattended.
- Never refuel generator while it is running and store reserve fuel carefully to avoid a fire hazard.
Electric Gates
- Electric gate motors and batteries are high theft items. Secure your installation with a suitable anti-theft bracket.
- Gate motor batteries will also start to fail from excessive load shedding or power outages, meaning if it is your only access method, emergency services and security won’t be able to enter your property, should they need to. Check your remote batteries regularly too.
- Remember to have an alternative access point other than just an electric gate motor.
- Ensure that your gate cannot be lifted off the slider track. Weld brackets onto posts or frames to prevent this.
Appliances and General Safety
- Fridges and other appliances can be damaged by power outages and or load shedding.
- Fridges and freezers that fail or loose power supply while you are away, will result in spoilt food.
- Have a trusted person check on your appliances while you are away. Rather not stock up on food before leaving. Alternatively, store frozen foods at a friend or family member.
- Candles and fuel lamps pose a huge fire hazard! Rather rely on affordable solar lamps to light your home during power outages.
- Ensure you don’t just rely on cell phone communication as cell towers can fail during during power outages.
- Your neighbour is your closest support, get to know them and assist each other. Inform them when you plan on going away so they can be vigilant during your absence. You can return the favor when they go away.
- Install sufficient outside lighting and security devices around you home, buildings and vehicles. Make your property unattractive to criminals. Heavy security deters them from entering your property. Put up security signage on your property that is clearly visible.
- Always keep your doors and security doors locked and be vigilant at all times.
